A Clarkston man charged in last week’s drunken hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old Lewiston girl remains in the Asotin County jail on misdemeanor counts.
James Schuetze, 45, faces second-degree murder in Nez Perce County for running his van into a parked vehicle at a Third Avenue apartment complex in Lewiston May 5, killing Sydney Byrd.
Schuetze left the scene and was arrested about 20 minutes later in Clarkston. Asotin County charges include driving with a suspended license and DUI, as his blood alcohol level was 0.126 at the time of his arrest. The Asotin County case was put on hold to allow Schuetze more time to confer with his attorney. He’s being held on $150,000 bond, and his next hearing is scheduled for Friday.
The court will soon address extradition to Nez Perce County, where Schuetze faces additional felony charges of aggravated battery for injuring another person during the crash, and leaving the scene of an injury collision. A $1 million bond has been set in Nez Perce County.
