The city of Burley has sent a letter to the owners of an ethanol plant located on the edge of town informing them that fines of up to $300 a day may be imposed if the company doesn’t comply with zoning restrictions and limit odors. Council members of the south-central Idaho city authorized the letter Tuesday, giving Pacific Ethanol 10 days to reduce the smell that some residents say is eye watering. Tim Raphael, a spokesman for Pacific Ethanol, says the company is working to quickly determine the cause of the odor and eliminate it. The Fresno, Calif.-based alternative energy company started producing ethanol at the $120 million plant in April. Raphael says it’s producing ethanol at its full capacity of 60 million gallons a year. (AP)
