A plan to install turbines on the Chester Dam in eastern Idaho this fall to generate power is being supported by both energy and conservation groups. The 457-foot-long Chester Dam is located on the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River between Ashton and St. Anthony. It was built in 1938. Symbiotics LLC, with offices in Rigby and Boise, has proposed adding two turbines to the dam to produce 3.3 megawatts of power. One megawatt of electricity serves about 600 homes. The project includes the building of a fish ladder that conservation groups say will help trout in 1 of the state’s prime sport fishing areas. Brent Smith, chief operating officer of Symbiotics, says he expects the Federal Regulatory Commission to approve a permit for the $13 million project “any time.” (AP)
