Cooler temperatures and higher humidity have allowed firefighters battling the 2,100 -plus- acre Porcupine wildfire burning about 20 miles southeast of Elk City to gain ground. Information Officer Vickie Guthrie says crews have been successful in constructing fire line as the lightning-caused blaze was less active.

Over 140 personnel have been assigned to the fire. Forest Service officials have closed the primitive Magruder Road from Mountain Meadows to Sabe Saddle. Meanwhile, mop-up operations continue on the 2,900-acre Snow Hole Fire, burning about 12 miles southwest of Cottonwood – that fire is 95-percent contained.
