An Army soldier from Boise who fled the country after learning his unit was heading to Iraq reportedly will plead guilty to a reduced charge of desertion.

Authorities say Pvt. Robin Long, 25, fled to Canada in 2005 after his unit was deployed from Fort Carson, Colo. His request for refuge was denied and he was deported in July.

Long’s lawyer says his client has reached an agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty to desertion with intent to remain away permanently - a lesser charge than desertion with intent to shirk hazardous duty.

Long could face prison time and a dishonorable discharge when he is sentenced on Friday. (AP)
