Some 265 Lewiston Potlatch employees will not strike after union members voted against the action, and will accept the company’s final contract proposal.

Workers at the sawmill and power boiler had originally voted a month ago to picket after rejecting the company’s proposal concerning salaries and pension benefits. A week later, a last-ditch effort to negotiate fell through, and union leaders declined to offer their members a second vote on the contract. However, they reversed their decision last week.

Union officials did not disclose how many of the members voted on Thursday, but did say there were enough to meet the minimum 30 percent turnout and 67 percent approval needed to ratify any action.

Potlatch’s offer gives the employees lump sum bonuses of 2.5 percent of each individual’s salaries in each of the next two years. Base salaries will increase by 2.5 percent in the third year of the contract and 3 percent in the fourth and final year.

It also increases monthly pension benefits from $40 to $45 per year of service, adding $1 per year of service in each of the first three years of the contract and $2 in the fourth year.
