CDA police seek approval to stock firearms in schools

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department in north Idaho has asked school officials to allow officers to bring their patrol rifles into the city’s schools so that officers will be more capable of protecting students from potential assailants.
Capt. Ron Clark, supervisor of the School Resource Officers, says officers need more firepower because school shootings typically involve heavily armed attackers.
Clark says rifles are more accurate at greater distances and are powerful enough to penetrate body armor.
He says the rifles would be locked in gun safes and the officers would be the only ones with access to the weapons.
The Coeur d’Alene School Board is expected to make a decision in December. (AP)
