U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo is holding firm in his stance that the proposed $885 billion economic stimulus package being debated in the Senate this week is too expensive, and he has vowed to vote against it.

The Idaho Republican remains opposed to the current package proposed by President Obama, saying Congress cannot rely on massive new government spending to help the economy recover.

Crapo says getting the economy moving again will need to be a rational mix of tax cuts, regulatory reforms and targeted spending, to name a few.

Despite his objections to the stimulus legislation, Crapo recognizes its forward momentum could mean important things for Idaho.

Crapo points out that the President’s proposal dwarfs every other spending program in U.S. history except for spending on NASA’s space program to date.

It is one-third higher than spending in Iraq, $300 billion more than the New Deal and more than $100 billion more than the cost of the entire Vietnam War.
