The Idaho Senate has voted unanimously to expand the authority of prosecutors and the state’s attorney general to issue subpoenas to Internet service providers when investigating sex crimes committed against children.
Supporters say without the change in the law, child sex offenders who use the Internet to target kids will continue to hide behind the anonymity of cyberspace.
Under the measure, records that Internet service providers would have to give to prosecutors wouldn’t include content of communications. Rather, they would be limited to the name, address, period of access, type and duration of service, network addresses, and means and source of payment for services.
The bill has also cleared the House and now heads to Gov. Butch Otter for signature. (AP)
