Clarkston man dies in wreck at Alpowa Summit

A Clarkston man was killed and another man was injured Sunday afternoon in a one-car accident on U.S. Highway 12 near Alpowa Grade.

According to the Washington State Patrol, James McLennan, 34, was driving a 2001 Volkswagen west just before 5 p.m. when it failed to negotiate a curve, and left the eastbound shoulder, rolling several times and falling about 250 feet down an embankment.

WSP and deputies from Garfield County responded to the accident, about 8 miles west of the Asotin/Garfield County line.  Investigators say McLennan was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the vehicle, Devin Stamper, 22, of Lewiston, was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was listed in fair condition.

The accident remains under investigation.
