Idaho Senate passes daycare licensing bill

idaho_capitol_4Despite some lawmakers’ objections to changes made in the House, the Idaho Senate has voted unanimously to pass a state day care licensing measure.

Thursday’s endorsement by the upper chamber follows Wedensday’s 61-5 vote in the House, and sends the measure to the governor for his signature.

The bill was amended this week in the House to relax requirements including boosting the number of children a facility can serve without falling under the state’s licensing oversight. Currently, Idaho’s system requires licenses for day cares with 13 or more kids.

When this passed the Senate 30-5 in March, it required licenses for facilities that care for four or more kids. But that was too strict for House conservatives, so they boosted that to seven or more.

The measure also shifts some of the financial burden for obtaining a license from the provider to the state. (AP, Idaho Statesman)
