The sound just before takeoff as members of the media were invited to take a ride aboard the fully restored World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress, “Sentimental Journey” Friday afternoon at the Lewiston/Nez Perce County Regional Airport.
The plane is on display at the airport over the Independence Day holiday weekend. The public is invited to stop by and take a tour inside the aircraft for $5 or enjoy a ride for $425.
Vintage aircraft like Sentimental Journey are a common attraction at big air shows across the country. But officials say its a rare event for an aircraft like the B-17 to visit regional airports like Lewiston. Pilot Jay Gates, who’s been a member of the Sentimental Journey flight crew for about 10 years says that’s not necessarily the case with this aircraft.
