National Fire Prevention Week is this week as fire departments across the country work with elementary schools to teach kids about the dangers of fires and ways to guard and protect against a catastrophic incident at home.

In Lewiston, Fire Marshal Linda Steputat says a week just isn’t enough, so crews along with “Firefighter Jeff” and “Spanner” the dog use the entire month of October to get the message out.

While the fire prevention program works to make sure each child recieves a smoke detector, the Lewiston Fire Department is also willing to provide smoke alarms to anyone while supplies last.

Steputat says anyone is eligible for a free smoke alarm (supplies limited)
