Still no solution to prevent Dworshak park closure

dworshak state parkTwo weeks after a meeting to discuss the possibility that state budget cuts could close Dworshak State Park, state and local officials say they are no closer to finding a solution.

Budget cuts have resulted in a $145,000 shortfall for operation of the park, which consists of Freeman Creek Campground, Three Meadows Group Camp, and Big Eddy Lodge and Marina.

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Board of Directors voted to begin the process of closing Dworshak State Park, as annual operating costs of $430,000 are beyond what the department can afford to continue managing the park, which brings in about $280,000 a year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the park, says the state has an option to bring in a private concessionaire through a sub-lease.

Until that or some other arrangement happens, the corps will continue to work toward termination of the current lease agreement.  Technically, that means the park should remain open through next summer, during which time the corps will solicit potential new lessees.
