The state Board of Education will consider a rule change to allow Idaho’s public universities to seek tuition or fee increases higher than the 10 percent allowed each year.
Trustees are scheduled to consider the proposal at a board meeting in Twin Falls later this week.
Agency spokesman Mark Browning says financial staff for the board made the request to give Idaho’s cash-strapped colleges and universities more flexibility in planning budgets for the next fiscal year.
Idaho colleges and universities are operating with less money compared to fiscal year 2009, and were ordered in September to cut another $15.2 million to help offset shortfalls in state revenue.
Browning says there is no guarantee the board will approve the plan to waive its policy prohibiting universities from requesting tuition increases for full-time students of more than 10 percent. (AP)
