The Idaho Republican Party intends to file a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service raising questions about Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Keith Allred and his status as head of a tax-exempt group.
Allred is the founder of The Common Interest, a nonpartisan, citizen’s advocacy organization. Last week, Allred sent a letter to members announcing his plans to seek the Democratic nomination in the 2010 Idaho governor’s race.
But state Republican Party officials say Allred’s foray into politics conflicts with federal rules barring tax-exempt groups from engaging in political campaign activity.
