WA House passes bill to allow military voters to fax or email ballots

The Washington House has unanimously approved a proposal from Secretary of State Sam Reed that would make voting easier for military personnel and those overseas.

The plan would allow those voters to return a ballot by fax or email as long as the voter’s signed declaration is returned with the ballot.

Current state law says that a ballot returned by fax or email may only be counted if the original is also received, which Reed says makes faxing or emailing votes useless, and confuses voters.

Of the 67,500 ballots that were mailed to Washington’s military and overseas voters for the 2008 General Election, there was a 73 percent turnout.

A companion measure to the House legislation is lodged in committee in the Senate.
