Pac-10 considers expanding to 12 teams

The Pac-10 athletic conference is exploring the possibility of expanding to twelve teams.

League Commissioner Larry Scott says that if the conference is going to expand, a decision likely would be made sometime in the next next six to 12 months.  Scott says it made sense to have a decision about expansion before starting to negotiate new television deals that expire following the 2011-2012 academic year.

The primary factor in the decision will be finding schools that fit into the conference culturally and academically, and determining whether the benefits of adding extra teams outweigh the costs.

KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City reported should the Pac-10 expand to 12 teams, Utah and Colorado would be the likely additions. Utah would be taken over BYU because of BYU’s refusal to play games on Sundays. BYU could either stay in the Mountain West or join the Big 12, filling the spot vacated by Colorado.

Any potential changes wouldn’t take effect until the 2011-2012 season at the earliest. (KHQ)
