Idaho House Education Committee endorses paying students who graduate early

In Boise, a legislative committee has endorsed a measure that would pay Idaho students who graduate early from high school.

Under the Master Advancement Pilot Project, passed by the House Education Committee, any student who completes the 1-12 curriculum at least one year early would be eligible for about $1,500 as a scholarship at one of Idaho’s publicly funded colleges and universities.

The plan would let 21 of the state’s 115 school districts and three of 41 charter schools participate for six years, to see how it works.

Lawmakers backing the bill say Idaho taxpayers now fund districts about $4,600 annually for each of their public school students. Minus the $1.500 scholarship, Idaho would split the remaining funds with districts, resulting in tens or even hundreds-of-thousands of dollars in savings to the state.

The bill will now be considered by the full House. (AP, Idaho Statesman)
