The Idaho Legislature is a step closer to passing a bill that would require Idahoans to provide photo identification to vote.
The House State Affairs Committee on Tuesday approved the measure, sending it to the full House.
House Majority Leader Mike Moyle says his bill will ensure voters are who they claim to be, though the Star Republican is not sure how the measure would address out-of-state voters who can’t provide identification in person.
Under the measure, voters without identification such as a valid driver’s license or passport would have to sign an affidavit attesting to their identity.
Lawmakers across the country have long debated voter identification laws. Proponents say providing photo identification upholds the integrity of the voting system, while critics say it discourages potential voters. (AP)
