Idaho Senate approves health-care ‘conscience’ bill

The Idaho Senate has backed a measure to allow pharmacists, nurses and other health-care workers to opt not to provide assistance for abortions, emergency contraception or end-of-life care, if they provide their employers written notice.

Friday’s 21-13 vote sends the measure to the House.

Idaho law now protects doctors from having to perform certain procedures if they’re morally opposed.

The latest bill would expand that to cover other health care professionals who disagree with procedures including using human embryonic stem cells or with providing some kinds of care for the terminally ill.

Lewiston Sen. Joe Stegner voted against the measure. (AP)
