Report: Hazardous waste volume declines in Idaho

An annual report to the Idaho governor and Legislature shows the state generated far less hazardous waste in 2009 than it did the year before.

The report from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality was released Monday. It showed that the state generated about 28 percent less hazardous waste in 2009 compared to the year before, and it imported a third less.

Brian Monson with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality said most of the state’s hazardous waste comes in from out of state, to be stored at a major commercial hazardous waste landfill operated by US Ecology near Grand View.

The Spokesman-Review reports that last year, more than 546,000 tons of hazardous waste was imported to the southern Idaho site. More than 5,000 tons was generated inside state borders. (AP)
