The number of students taking classes at Brigham Young University-Idaho continues to grow.
The university reports that 23,000 students attended classes at the Rexburg campus in 2009, up from more than 21,800 in 2008. The total is the most ever and continues a steady, upward trend since the university switched to a four-year program in 2001.
University officials attribute the increase to a system built around three separate 14-week semesters. Each student is admitted to a track consisting of two semesters – like the spring/fall or fall/winter, for example. By offering classes in three semesters, campus administrators say they are able to serve more students during the academic year.
Admissions officials say without the three semester system, thousands of students would be turned away. (AP)
