The Idaho Senate on Thursday delayed voting on a bill to reward students who graduate early from high school with scholarships, allowing lawmakers time to amend the legislation to include an expiration date.
Meridian Republican Sen. Russ Fulcher introduced the House bill, which would create a six-year pilot program that aims to save Idaho money and move accelerated students more quickly into college. Fulcher brought the Senate debate on the bill to a halt, requesting the measure move to the 14th order for amendment to make sure the legislation includes a clearly defined sunset clause.
Idaho taxpayers now give public schools about $4,600 a year for each of their students.
Under the plan, a student would receive about 35 percent of that funding in a scholarship to an Idaho college for each year they graduate early. The money left over would be split between the school district and the state. (AP)
