Bill would give Idaho school districts more charter help

Sen. John Goedde

Lawmakers in Boise aim to give Idaho school districts more help in weighing proposals for new charter schools, which offer an alternative to the traditional classroom.

The Senate Education Committee voted on Monday to introduce a measure by Coeur d’Alene Republican Sen. John Goedde, who says his plan would carve out a place in Idaho code for a practice that already takes place, when school districts call on the state Department of Education or Public Charter School Commission for assistance.

Goedde says local school districts weighing plans for new charter schools in their community should have the opportunity, formally, to call on the expertise of the commission and other state officials.

Charter schools in Idaho had to seek approval from local school districts until 2004, when state lawmakers created Idaho’s public charter school commission to provide an additional route for authorization.  (AP)
