Idaho’s newest community college will increase tuition and fees for students to help offset budget shortfalls, increasing the price for each credit hour from $119 to $129.
Trustees for the College of Western Idaho approved the 8.4 percent increase on Tuesday.
Legislative budget writers introduced a plan earlier this month to spend $25 million on Idaho’s community colleges during the next fiscal year, which amounts to a 12.6 percent loss in total funding.
The budget was stripped of a proposed infusion of cash to help the new college in Nampa handle dramatic increases in student enrollment. The governor’s budget recommendation included more than $1 million for enrollment growth at CWI, which opened last January. (AP)
