The Idaho State Police plan to hire a dozen new troopers this summer at a time that other state agencies are announcing layoffs.
The new officers are expected to start work in July, the beginning of the new fiscal year, in the Jerome and Pocatello areas.
ISP officials say three of the new troopers are in training as they switch from one law enforcement job to another, while nine other recruits are to be hired July 6 and then trained. Despite the new hires, the ISP is still not fully staffed.
Earlier this month, Department of Health and Welfare officials announced they plan to close nine of 29 offices across the state and lay off 126 employees, while public schools face a 7.5 percent budget cut. (AP)
