UI’s Nellis aims criticism at state leaders

Duane Nellis

University of Idaho President Duane Nellis says state budget cuts are risking education programs and innovation at the Moscow campus.

Nellis spoke to faculty, staff and students Wednesday as part of the president’s annual university address.

Nellis says the struggle by state and national leaders to maintain their commitment to research and scholarship is putting at risk the university’s ability to produce valuable, new research and innovation. The university has absorbed a 21 percent funding cut in the last two years.

Those cuts have led to the restructuring or outright cuts in 49 academic programs, and Nellis warns other vital programs are close to extinction.  (AP)
