Former Potlatch-area man convicted of murder in California

After four days of deliberation, a San Diego jury has found a former Potlatch area resident guilty of first-degree murder in the slashing death of 43-year-old court reporter.

The jury returned its verdict late Monday against Jonathan French, 42, for the murder of Jennifer Stark.

French testified he “snapped” and his attorney, contending the killing was committed in the heat of passion, asked the jury to find his client guilty of a lesser manslaughter charge.

But the prosecution countered French intended to kill Stark after their on-again, off-again relationship once again became troubled.

French faces 26 years to life in prison when he is sentenced July 12.

French is a 1987 graduate of Potlatch High School.
