Washington Beverage Association considers initiative to rollback tax

Washington’s soda wholesalers are considering an initiative to roll back the state Legislature’s new taxes on several kinds of food and drinks.

The Washington Beverage Association filed paperwork this week with state election officials for two possible versions of the tax-rollback initiative.

Both versions would repeal higher taxes on pop, bottled water, candy, gum and certain processed foods. One version also adds a mass-market beer tax to the list.

Tim Martin is president of the Beverage Association. He says they’re still trying to assemble a political coalition, and decide which version to move ahead with.

The campaign would need more than 240,000 valid petition signatures by July 2, which could be a tough goal to meet. (AP)
