Cumberland, Lee advance as lone unbeatens in series

Lee’s Scott Swinson threw a complete-game four-hitter and shut out the Lewis-Clark State Warriors in World Series play for the first time since 2005 as the Flames advanced in the winners’ bracket with a 8-0 win Monday night at Harris Field.

Swinson threw 117 pitches in the victory, which propelled the Flames into a winners’ bracket matchup with Cumberland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lewis-Clark State falls into the loser’s bracket and will face Embry-Riddle Tuesday at 3 p.m. In the other game Tuesday, Oklahoma City and Point Loma Nazarene will meet at 11 a.m.

Embry-Riddle advanced by eliminating Belhaven 8-4 and Point Loma Nazarene eliminated fellow Golden State Athletic Conference foe California Baptist 7-6. In the winners’ bracket, it was Cumberland over Oklahoma City 8-1.

In the Lewis-Clark State game, the Warriors committed four errors and were shut out for the first time since losing 5-0 to Embry-Riddle in 2005. It was the second time the Warriors have been shut out in World Series play – the other time was a 4-0 loss to Cumberland in 1995.

The four hits were the fewest for the Warriors in World Series play since recording only five in that 2005 loss to Embry-Riddle.

Offensively for Lewis-Clark State, Pat Murray and Jason Hague had two hits apiece.

The Warriors fell to 48-4 on the season while Lee improved to 51-11.

All three games will be carried live online at www.koze-sports.com and both the LC/Embry-Riddle game and the Cumberland/Lee game will also be broadcast live on Talk Radio 950 KOZE-AM.
