After 16 national championships and 34 years, long-time Lewis-Clark State College head baseball coach Ed Cheff has decided to retire as the NAIA’s winningest coach.
Cheff, 67, who won more than 1,700 games, says the main reason for stepping down revolved around spending more time with family.

Long-term retirement plans are unknown at this point, but Cheff says for the next few days he will just be grandpa.
Cheff says there are no plans beyond the next 10 days
An often requested speaker at coaching clinics across the country for years, Cheff says he hasn’t given much thought about speaking engagements or writing about his experiences, though he doesn’t completely rule either out.

There was no set time frame as to when retirement would come, but there was a contingency plan in place when the time came. That plan included LCSC Athletic Director Gary Picone taking the program over.
Cheff says he has believed for a long time that Picone was and is the right man for the job.

For now Cheff will continue to help recruit next year’s team and work with the coaching staff to ensure a seamless transition.
