Mild fire year so far for Washington

So far its been a fairly mild year for wildfires in Washington.

The state Department of Natural Resources says wildfire numbers are below average despite a higher-than-usual number of lightning strikes this year.

The agency says there have been 322 wildfires this year on the 12.7 million acres of public and private lands it protects. In a typical year, 552 fires would have occurred by this point in the fire season. Acreage burned is also down by about 2,000 acres.

But heat and dry conditions on both sides of the Cascades are expected to increase fire risks this weekend. (AP)
