Umatilla depot destroys half its chemical agents

Officials at the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility near Hermiston say it has passed the halfway mark for destroying its stockpile of chemical warfare agents.

As of Friday, the chemical depot has destroyed more than 1,850 tons of liquid chemical agents that have been stored at the eastern Oregon site since the 1960s.

The depot began incinerating the chemicals in 2004 and has gotten rid of all of its nerve agents. It now is working to destroy mustard agent stockpiles, a job expected to take another two years or less.  (AP)
