State ed board approves UI security contracts

The Idaho State Board of Education has approved the University of Idaho’s “hybrid” security force of Moscow police officers and private guards.

Moscow police have provided campus security since 1966, with the current year contract costing the university just more than $1 million.

The new four-year contracts will pay the police department $938,000 per year, and AlliedBarton – one of the largest private security companies in the country – $385,000 per year.

UI officials say the cost for security could increase depending on things like overtime and holiday pay, and extra services needed for events like home football games and the university’s spring jazz festival.

Both security contracts go into effect Oct. 1, and have options for renewal up to six years after the initial four-year term.
