Two Orofino men have pleaded guilty to illegally digging for artifacts in Idaho County last year.
67-year-old Eddie Anderson, and his 33-year-old son, Eddie Anderson, Jr., pled guilty this week to violating the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says as part of a plea deal, the two men admitted they went to the Salmon River Canyon, near the mouth of Graves Creek, on April 7, 2009, looking for “chips” or arrowheads on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
The younger Anderson used his father’s tools and dug several holes, sifted soil, and discovered the arrowheads. However, such conduct on BLM land is prohibited without a permit.
The federal charge is a Class A misdemeanor, which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year, supervised release of up to one year, and a fine of up to $10,000.
A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
