Cooler weather Sunday helped Idaho firefighters battling blazes at high elevations in the central part of the state, as well as firefighters at lower elevations in southern Idaho.
The Hurd fire, some of it burning at elevations above 8,000 feet in subalpine fir, lodgepole pine and Douglas fir about eight miles northwest of Cascade, is 33 percent contained and has scorched about 1,300 acres. Crews have been working on mopping up hot spots, building fire lines in some areas, and obliterating fire lines in other areas.
The Valley County sheriff’s office lifted all evacuation orders at noon Sunrday, although some residents near Tamarack Resort were still on notice to be ready to leave quickly.
Meanwhile, the 54-square-mile Long Butte fire about four miles west of Hagerman could be contained soon. That blaze destroyed 10 outbuildings and two unoccupied trailers.
Firefighters are also getting ahead on a number of other smaller fires in the region. (AP)
