Excavation work continues on diesel spill near Lochsa River

Idaho Transportation Department crews continue to monitor and excavate along U.S. Highway 12 near the Lochsa River, where a tanker truck and pup trailer overturned last week and spilled nearly 8,000 gallons of diesel into a borrow pit.

Containment booms and absorbent pads have been placed at the edge of the river to minimize the effects of the spill. Hazardous materials experts have been on the scene since the accident, which happened about 136 miles east of Lewiston.

A small amount of sheen appeared near the bank of the river Saturday, across the highway from where the spill occurred. Measures to capture the material appeared to be working as intended and the sheen was contained within about two feet of the riverbank.

Absorbent pads that spanned the Lochsa also were preventing material from spreading down river.

The highway will be limited to single-lane traffic through the spill area with alternative traffic controlled by flaggers as crews continue with excavation and drilling. Motorists are advised to expect minor delays when traveling through the area.
