Clarkston man critically injured in Whitman County industrial accident

A Clarkston man was critically injured in an industrial accident Monday morning while working at the Van Dyke gravel pit near Malden in Whitman County.

According to a Whitman County Sheriff’s Office news release, 21-year-old Kyle Phillips was operating a large Caterpillar Pit dump truck and backed over the edge of a gravel stock pile while dumping his load. The truck fell over backwards approximately 20 feet and landed on its top.

Phillips was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane by air ambulance where he is listed in critical condition.

Phillips is an employee of DeAtley Crushing, who is running the crushing operation at the pit.

Further investigation will be handled by the Mining Safety and Health Administration.
