A 31-year-old Pocatello man has become the U.S. Ski Mountaineering champion after taking first in the national championship at Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
Luke Nelson started ski mountaineering and ultra-marathon running about six years ago. Ski mountaineering combines the sports of Telemark, Alpine and backcountry skiing with mountaineering.
Saturday’s competition race alternated between climbing and skiing sections of the mountain.
Nelson, who works as a physician assistant at Idaho Sport and Spine, finished the race in 2 hours and 38 minutes. (AP)
