Idaho Supreme Court tosses state redistricting map

The Idaho Supreme Court has shot down the state’s new map for congressional and legislative districts.

The justices issued a ruling Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by Twin Falls County against the redistricting plan crafted last fall by a bipartisan commission.

In its legal challenge, Twin Falls County argued the new boundaries created a disadvantage for voters because it divides the county into two districts. The justices agreed, finding that the map in general divides counties more than necessary to satisfy the federal “one person-one vote” standard.

Wednesday’s ruling essentially forces the commission back to work to draft a new map capable of passing constitutional muster.

The reapportionment plan was approved in October by a commission appointed to take over after the first panel failed to reach agreement.  (AP)
