Kamiah is the favorite to headquarter the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest supervisors office.
An independent team comprised of Forest Service employees recently studied several potential sites and chose Kamiah as the most centrally located to manage the 4-million-acre national forest. Kamiah would also be the cheapest site to build a new headquarters building.
The proposal was brought by evolving combination of the Orofino-based Clearwater Forest and Grangeville-based Nez Perce Forest.
The study says consolidating headquarters into one location would save between $10 million and $14 million over a 20-year time period.
