WA Senate supports forming school funding panel

The Washington Senate has approved a plan to form a new committee to respond to the the state Supreme Court’s recent ruling on school finance.

The resolution passed Monday would establish a joint select committee on school funding, consisting of four lawmakers from both political parties.

The state Supreme Court ruled in January that the state is not fulfilling its constitutional duty in the way it pays for education, by not fully funding basic education and relying too much on local levy dollars. The court said it will oversee the legislature’s action to fix these problems.

The new committee would keep communication open with the Supreme Court.  (AP)
