Warriors top Whitworth, lose ground in poll

Playing its fifth game in four days, the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team held on for a 6-4 win over Whitworth University Tuesday afternoon in Spokane.

Senior outfielder Jordan Payne drove in two runs and sophomore catcher Kevin Hawk added two hits and an RBI as the Warriors overcame three errors in the win.

Mitchell Wilhite got the win allowing two earned runs over 5 innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior Zach Clanton earned his first save of the year with a one-two-three 9th inning.

With the win LC improves to 33-10 while Whitworth falls to 20-13-1.

Meanwhile, the Warriors lost ground in the latest NAIA National Top-25 Poll.

The Warriors, who won three of four games on the road against Oregon Tech, dropped one spot to #10.

Louisiana State – Shreveport continues to hold down the top spot in the poll, followed by Oklahoma City, Lee of Tennessee, Azusa Pacific of California and Faulkner of Alabama rounds out the top five.

The College of Idaho is the only other regional team in the rankings at #24.

The Warrior resume play at home this weekend with a four-game NAIA West series against Patten University.

Games are scheduled for Friday at 6pm PDT with a double-header Saturday at 1pm and a single game Sunday at 1pm.
