Mother of slain Grangeville boy will stand trial on felony charges in August

The mother of a 3-year-old Grangeville boy murdered last year by the woman’s live-in boyfriend is scheduled for trial in August on felony charges of injury to a child and fraudulent procurement of public assistance.

22-year-old Angela Johnson, now of Lewiston, pleaded not guilty to the charges during an arraignment hearing in Grangeville’s 2nd District Court on Thursday.

Johnson’s son was beaten to death in March last year by her boyfriend, Todd Carver. Carver was convicted of first-degree murder during a jury trial in December and is serving a life sentence without parole. His case is under appeal.

Court records accuse Johnson of willfully causing or permitting her child to be placed in a dangerous situation with Carver, who had been released from prison on grand theft charges only weeks before she and her sons moved in with him. She also is accused of presenting food stamps to three Grangeville businesses without authority to do so – a felony.

A trial is scheduled for Aug. 13.
