Washington State University has reported two different “phishing” scams, where emails from official-looking sources are used to illegally collect personal financial data.
According to a WSU news release, the emails have hit the inboxes of employees and students at the university. The most recent messages mimic a WSU email from “webmaster@wsu.edu” with the subject line “FW: Account maintenance.” The email asks recipients to “confirm their continued membership,” with the threat of service suspension if certain actions are not completed.
Another email comes from “sunami@stonline.sk” and has a subject of “Increase Your MailBox Size – Washington State University,” and prompts recipients to go to a web address to upgrade their account storage limit. Both messages are bogus.
WSU information services recommends ignoring the emails. If recipients did click on an included link, but didn’t enter any personal information, there is likely no danger. Those who did complete the requests should change their WSU account passwords immediately and contact the computer help desk at (509) 335-4357 or helpdesk@wsu.edu.
