Decertification hearing underway for Lewiston police officer

Richard Fuentes

A veteran Lewiston police officer faces decertification over allegations of off-duty misconduct.

A hearing officer from the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training program at Meridian began taking testimony Monday morning at the Nez Perce County Courthouse regarding Officer Richard Fuentes.

Lewiston Police Chief Steven Orr says his department conducted an internal investigation into the allegations against the seven-year LPD veteran Fuentes last year.  The incident occurred in 2010, and Orr believes decertification isn’t warranted in the matter.

However, POST decided after corrective action was taken by the department to initiate the decertification hearing after reportedly receiving an anonymous letter.

Fuentes remains on active duty during the POST investigation, and a decision on decertification likely is several weeks away.
