IDFG closes chinook season on stretches of Lower Salmon River

The salmon season is about to close on parts of the Lower Salmon River.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is shutting down Chinook salmon fishing on popular stretches of the river starting on Sunday. The sections to close are from the mouth of Shorts Creek upstream to the uppermost boat ramp at Vinegar Creek and from the Rice Creek Bridge upstream to the U.S. Highway 95 Time Zone Bridge.

By Sunday, the wildlife agency predicts anglers will have harvested nine-tenths of Idaho’s sport fishery share of hatchery-raised Chinook destined for the Rapid River Hatchery.

By leaving open the Little Salmon River and the lower Salmon River from the Time Zone Bridge to Shorts Creek, managers hope to allow anglers to harvest the balance.  (AP)
