Fall enrollment at the University of Idaho rose slightly, by 181 students over last year.
UI reported a total statewide enrollment of 12,493 students. The university pointed out that students taking classes for external certificate programs, like public school teachers, and students in study abroad programs were not counted under new guidelines.
It’s the first time UI has reported enrollment numbers under new guidelines approved in August by the State Board of Education.
Idaho public colleges and universities used to report numbers from the 10th day of classes, but the board bumped that deadline to mid-October so the institutions could count more of the high school students who take college classes.
According to the university, 32 percent of its freshman class of 1,633 students are first-generation college students, and 73 percent are from Idaho.
