Gas fire forces evacuations in downtown Lewiston

Crews from the Lewiston Fire Department and Asotin County Fire District #1 responded to a large gas fire burning behind the Lewiston Tribune in downtown Lewiston this afternoon.

The fire erupted moments after an explosion at around 1:30pm. Several buildings, including the Lewiston Tribune, were evacuated as crews worked to contain the blaze, which was brought under control at about 2:15pm.

No injuries were reported.

Several pieces of equipment were reportedly involved.

The fire broke out near where crews are working on the Fifth Street rebuild downtown.

Fire officials say it appears that a 4-inch high-pressure natural gas line was ruptured during excavation.

More than 800 Avista customers were without power as a result of the fire.
